On-line resource library covers softstarters

Fairford have launched a comprehensive new on-line resource library for softstarters, providing information on everything from basic application advice to detailed data on energy saving performance.
Fairford have launched a comprehensive new on-line resource library for softstarters, providing information on everything from basic application advice to detailed data on energy saving performance. The site aims to provide everything an electrical engineer needs to know about Soft Starters, quickly, at the click of a button. Simple navigation and a broad range of downloadable data ensure that the site is easy to use and above all useful.

The market for softstarters is growing steadily, thanks to their operational simplicity, relatively low cost (especially at higher kW ratings) and energy optimising performance.

Electrical engineers in all industry sectors are generally under pressure to cut costs and bring projects in on increasingly short deadlines, hence the need to source accurate and informative data quickly, which is where the site should come in very handy.

In a highly competitive market such as the UK's, the primary reason for using a soft starter has to be cost.

The majority of softstart applications being on 5kW motors and above, this is where soft starters come into their own, in cost terms.

Above 5kW, the price differential becomes exponential in favour of soft starters; the cost of a Fairford QFE unit being approximately 33% of that of an equivalent variable speed drive at 22kW and just 20% at 100kW.

All the more reason to check out soft start information before specifying any fixed speed motor application.

The majority of the new website is open access with further levels of electrical and engineering data available to those who register on the site.

There is also an on-line store where a large range of Fairford's standard product range is available for purchase.

Users can also sign up for a regular email that will keep them up to date with any new information that is being loaded onto the site.

Industrial bus cables' jackets resist abrasion

Bus cables, designed specifically for constantly moving energy chain systems in industrial applications, have highly abrasion-resistant TPE outer jackets.
Igus has now developed a completely new series of bus cables, designed specifically for constantly moving energy chain systems in industrial applications. The special cables, 'Chainflex CFBUS', have highly abrasion-resistant TPE outer jackets and are now available for standard field bus systems. The cables also conform to DESINA, UL and CSA standards.

(Abbreviations: DESINA is Distributed and Standardised Installation technology for machine tools and manufacturing systems.

UL is Underwriters Laboratory.

CSA is Canadian Standards Authority.) Experiments performed in the igus laboratory proved CFBUS.001 Profibus cables could achieve more than 14 million double strokes (DH) at a bending radius of just 6.5 x d (S = 5m, V = 3.5m/s; a = 7.5m/s2).

No damage to the cable or impairment of its transmission properties was detected.

Machinery manufacturers now have the option to use a mechanically sophisticated cable for applications with longer traversing distances and transmission paths.

* Protection against mechanical forces - the design and materials used for Chainflex CFBUS cables ensure the sensitive core insulation is always well protected.

The TPE outer jacket is highly abrasion-proof, oil-resistant and flame-retardant and is extruded at high pressure to stabilise the cable against any arising tensile and compressive forces.

The bus elements, which are stranded with an especially short pitch length, are channelled through a gusset-filled extruded TPE inner jacket and protected against excessively high mechanical stress during the bending process.

* Suitable for clean-room use - the TPE jacket material used is also suitable for clean-room applications: a fact now established by the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology and Automation (Stuttgart, Germany).

According to the Institute, this material can be used in sensitive environments at traversing speeds up to V = 1m/s in clean-rooms of ISO class 3 Note: ISO Class 3 pursuant to the very strict DIN EN 14644-1 standard complies with Classes 1 of the two standards, VDI 2083 and US Fed.

Cable strain relief is twice as effective

A cable strain relief strap has now been developed for igus Energy Chains and effectively eliminates safety issues for cables and hoses and provides double the relief of a standard strain relief.
A new cable strain relief strap has now been developed for igus Energy Chains. The 'Chainfix' strap, used with igus cable carriers, effectively eliminates safety issues for cables and hoses and provides double the relief of a standard strain relief. In highly dynamic Energy Chain applications, the demands placed on a safe strain relief are especially high: limited space, multi-layered cables, vibrations and fluctuating temperatures.

This particularly applies with electric cables, but also with other media, such as hydraulic and pneumatic hoses.

A conventional, standard strain relief is barely sufficient here.

To fix cables safely inside an Energy Chain, igus' engineers in Cologne have developed the Chainfix strap.

Its slim width (cable width plus about 4mm) and low height (cable diameter plus about 30mm) allow optimal use of limited internal space.

An important design feature is the ribbed pressure-, counter- and press-trough.

The ribs increase the supporting surface of the cables.

This causes the cables to clutch the troughs, resulting in a safe strain relief for various cable diameters and materials.

Insertion into the tightly packed connecting elements is made easier by a special 'foot', which allows the strap to be inserted into the C-rail at an angle of just 24%.

According to laboratory tests, the strain relief provided by Chainfix straps is double that of standard strain reliefs.

The tests compared standard straps (double- and press-trough made of shock-resistant plastic) with Chainfix straps (double- and press-trough made of igus material igumid G).

The stainless steel Chainfix strap, CF 18.1 (for an 18mm cable diameter), attained a strain relief of 1.282N.

Chainfix straps are available in steel, black varnished or stainless steel.
