Quarter-turn insert locks range expanded

Established 1000 series of quarter-turn insert locks now includes many recent technical developments and a large number of additional variant types.
The innovative 1000 series of quarter-turn insert locks from EMKA has been a mainstay of electrical/electronic enclosures and cabinets in Europe for nearly 40 years, and has been considered a major advance in design by virtue of their common housing section, which enables rapid installation via single hole fixing, using standard 'EMKA 20mm' square cut-out. EMKA are pleased to announce that the present 1000 series now includes many recent technical developments and a large number of additional variant types so that it is probably the most comprehensive modular locking system available to specialist panel builders today. The 1000 series offers protection levels of IP65 and IP54 for applications as diverse as - steel/GRP/plastic/multi-layer enclosures, cabinets, lockers, machine guards, access panels, covers, roadside cabinets, industrial desking, workstations and secure waste containers.

The 1000 series features a large variety of different inserts including: triangle, square, double bit, and key type.

Key lockable options include barrel locks, wing handles, T and L handles as well as a Key captive version, which prevents the key being left in place.

Tamper and vibration proof requirements are met by an unusual 'safety' variant with a number of insert options.

Special inserts may be provided throughout the range to suit custom requirements and the standard housing comes in a variety of lengths to suit material thicknesses or door depths.

Many types permit padlock operation and there are also a variety of items for high security applications and to suit specific key requirements, eg special automotive and railway applications where ASSA and KABA specifications may be called for.

An exceptional selection of standard cams is an important feature of this program - when combined with various housing lengths standard configurations can be provided to suit almost all applications up to 92mm long.

Once again special cams are available and custom designs can also be supplied to customer specification.

Continuous development has ensured that these simple quarter turn locks are suited to many environments - with finishes to suit outdoor or hazardous environments, e g, stainless steel for salt spray, polyamide for wet environments and wash down areas.

In addition all key barrels have front plates in stainless steel and are shuttered to reduce ingress of dust and water.

Since the range was first introduced as a single point locking solution, multi-point locking has also been introduced to enable 2-point or 3-point closure (and more if required) by use of heavy-duty latches and cam operated rod systems.

Other recent options include powder coating to match customer colours and the addition of a customer's logo on certain housings.

Kit saves 15% on electrical test tools purchase

Electric motor, drive, cables and switchgear troubleshooting and preventative maintenance kit offers a 15% saving over the purchase of the test tools separately.
Fluke, the world leader in compact professional tools, has introduced a kit aimed at rapid troubleshooting and preventative maintenance for motors and variable frequency drives. Containing a recently introduced combined insulation tester/digital multimeter (DMM), a current clamp and a phase rotation indicator, all in a rugged case, the kit offers a 15% saving over the purchase of the test tools separately. The new Fluke 1587MDT Advanced Motor and Drive Troubleshooting Kit includes everything needed for identifying electrical problems on motors, cables and switchgear.

The Fluke 1587 Insulation Multimeter combines insulation test measurements, from 0.01MW to 2GW at test voltages in five steps from 50V to 1000V, with the capability of a high end DMM.

For adjustable speed motor drives, it features an integral selectable low pass filter which blocks unwanted high frequencies to provide accurate and stable measurements of AC voltage and frequency.

The 1587 features a large display with bright backlight and is supplied with a remote probe to enable one-handed insulation testing via a trigger on the probe handle, as well as a plug-in K-type thermocouple temperature probe.

It has CAT III 1000V/CAT IV 600V overvoltage rating.

The Fluke i400 Current Clamp provides accurate AC current measurement, between 1A and 400A, without breaking the circuit.

Its compact design offers measurement on conductors up to 32mm in diameter with a similar CAT III 1000V/CAT IV 600V overvoltage safety rating.

The recently introduced Fluke 9040 Phase Rotation Indicator, which completes the kit, provides a large LCD display of all three phases to easily determine field rotation and phase sequence.

Working within a 40V to 700V range, it is powered from the circuit under test so does not require a battery.

The fitted leads have test probes with variable clamping ranges, ensuring safe contact even in industrial sockets.

The new Fluke 1587 MDT comes with all three meters and user manuals in a rugged, hard case and is available at a recommended price of GBP 489 from Fluke authorised wholesalers and distributors.

Power management devices enhance reliability

Power management devices provide a standard, off-the-shelf programmable mixed-signal solution for power management that enhances reliability and speeds time-to-market.
Lattice Semiconductor today introduced its second generation Power Manager II devices along with details of the first device available, the ispPAC-POWR1220AT8. The Power Manager II family is a functional superset of Lattice's earlier award winning ispPAC Power Manager mixed-signal devices that provide a complete power management solution for printed circuit boards (PCBs) through an optimized set of programmable digital and analog functions. All Power Manager devices provide a standard, off-the-shelf programmable mixed-signal solution for power management that enhances reliability and speeds time-to-market.

Analog features such as input comparator thresholds and digital functions such as supply control sequences are programmed into non-volatile E2CMOS elements on the devices using an IEEE1149.1 protocol.

The new Power Manager II devices add power supply margining and trimming to first generation device features such as power supply voltage sequencing and monitoring.

'Our Power Manager devices were introduced in 2003.

Since then, Lattice has led the industry in applying programmability to mixed-signal power management ICs,' said Stan Kopec, Lattice vice president of corporate marketing.

'Now our second generation Power Manager II devices, in addition to integrating all power supply management functions into one chip, provide more precise monitoring and more accurate voltage control, and that improves system reliability.

The Power Manager II devices are ideal power management solutions for emerging applications and specifications, such as AdvancedTCA (Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture).

For example, the1220AT8 device can act as a coprocessor to an IPMC (Intelligent Platform Management Controller) in an AdvancedTCA FRU (Field Replaceable Unit).' Kopec continued: 'The sequence control intelligence built into the on-chip CPLD can interrupt the processor under fault conditions, reducing the processing load on the IPMC.' * POWR1220AT8 Architecture - the POWR1220AT8 device integrates a 48 Macrocell ruggedized CPLD, dual precision voltage monitoring comparators with an accuracy of 0.5%, a 10-bit Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) for voltage measurements, and eight 8-bit Digital to Analog Converters (DAC) for trimming power supplies.

The integrated I2C interface enables a microcontroller, such as an IPMC, to read the status of all the comparators (inputs and outputs) as well as control the power supply voltage level across its entire operating range.

Additionally, the controller can measure not only locally generated voltages, but current levels as well.

* New margin and trim block provides accurate supply voltage control - the ispPAC POWR1220AT8 device integrates a unique Margin and Trim Block (MTB) that provides a flexible mechanism for both setting and maintaining the output voltage of a power supply to within 1% of its set value ('trimming'), as well as the ability to vary a power supply voltage to +/- 5% of its target value for quality control purposes ('margining').

The MTB consists of 8 TrimCells to simultaneously control the power supply voltages of up to eight supplies.

Each TrimCell has an 8-bit DAC and 6 DAC registers for margining and trimming flexibility.

Accuracy of the trimmed voltage across operating temperature, load, and age of the power supply is achieved through a Digital Closed Loop Trim control circuit.

The Digital Closed Loop Trim control circuit continuously compares the voltage set point for a given power supply with the output of the on-chip ADC monitoring that power supply voltage.

The resulting error signal automatically increases or decreases the DAC voltage, maintaining the power supply voltage at a constant value.

Furthermore, the external microcontroller can monitor the power supply voltage through the on-chip ADC and directly control the corresponding DAC through the I2C interface.

In addition, the TrimCell also can store 4 different DAC code settings or configurations that can easily be selected using hardware pins dedicated to voltage profile selection.

Software Support Designs for the ispPAC-POWR1220AT8 device are implemented using Lattice's Windows-based PAC-Designer Software version 4.0.

The embedded LogiBuilder software module in PAC-Designer supports the implementation of multiple control sequence algorithms: for example, IPMC command response, Payload power management and AMC management required in ATCA applications.

Designers are able to implement complex algorithms using 7 types of instructions.

With an extremely intuitive design flow, users can learn its operation and complete designs in minutes.

Further enhancing its ease-of-use, the Margin and Trim macro embedded in PAC-Designer 4.0 automatically determines the resistor network for a given power supply based on its output voltage required.

Slim fan keeps electrical cabinets cool

Speed controllable fan, designed for applications where space is at a premium, produces a maximum flow rate of 560 ft3/min and a static pressure of 3.1in SWG.
A new speed controllable fan, designed for applications where space is at a premium, has been added to the 'SlimLine' range of fans from Air Control Industries of Chard. Developed originally for vending machines, but has since proven ideal for control cabinets and similar applications, the new 'VBL9/9' fan produces a maximum flow rate of 560 CFM and a static pressure of 3.1 In SWG. It is available in 230V and 115V versions so can be designed in for equipment that is intended either for home or export markets.

In addition, it has a demountable inlet plate that facilitates integration of the fan into customer-made inlet arrangements.

Like other products in the ACI SlimLine range, the VBL9/9 features a precision, gravity-die-cast impeller scroll that results in a slim profile which allows flush mounting of the fan on the inlet or outlet by means of tapped holes.

The scroll impeller is also light in weight and quieter than conventional sheet metal fabrications.

Common features across the SlimLine range include an external rotor motor built into the fan plus fully integrated bearings; an assembly that helps to shorten the fan, permits precision balancing and achieves efficient cooling being located directly in the centre of the air stream generated, which enhances the unit's longevity.

In addition to simple voltage regulation speed control, the SlimLine range can also be supplied with an optional DC control board for hook up to either PLC or PWM controllers.

Energy chains run quieter and smoother

Low noise, smooth running range of cable carriers, designed for applications requiring an extremely precise operation, meet the latest international guidelines for charge process and discharge.
Igus has expanded its product offering to incorporate its low noise, smooth running System E6 range of cable carriers to its line of ESD conductive Energy Chains. The E6 ESD Energy Chains also meet the latest international guidelines for charge process and discharge. System E6 is designed for applications requiring an extremely precise operation.

The short pitch and link design of the Energy Chain reduces noise and vibration, which can affect machine performance.

System E6 is well-suited for printing machinery, measurement equipment, precision-cutting systems and clean room applications.

Its modular design enables it to be easily lengthened or shortened.

igus developed its specially designed, electrically conductive polymer material more than 10 years ago and has been offering ESD Energy Chains for protection in potentially explosive environments since 1992.

Both the E6 and E4 ESD Energy Chains meet the requirements of SEMI E78-0998, the new international materials and maintenance resource for critical environment applications, such as semiconductor and electronic production.

Another benefit of the System E6 ESD E-Chains is its permanent conductivity.

System E6 uses a plastic flex tab, rather than a traditional pin and bore, to connect the chain links.

This flexible tab secures the connection both mechanically and electrically and is completely resistant to wear.

It enables long-term, constant conductivity.

ESD Energy Chains are conductive and eliminate the potential for sparks.

Consequently they are a critical component for applications in the semiconductor and mining industries, clean rooms, microelectronic assembly areas, or in any application with hazardous or potentially explosive conditions.

Conversely, static electricity is allowed to build up in non-conductive cable carriers.

Resultant sparks may cause an explosion to occur.

As with all igus ESD Energy Chains, the System E6 ESD E-Chains are light grey in colour to distinguish them from other igus E-Chains.

Cable glands approved for hazardous areas

Brass metric cable glands have been approved for use in both Zone 1 and 2 hazardous areas and also in Zone 21 and 22 areas, which are subject to dust explosion risks.
R Stahl's new Series 8160 brass metric cable glands are approved for use in both Zone 1 and 2 hazardous areas and also in Zone 21 and 22 areas which are subject to dust explosion risks. As the new glands meet the tightness requirements of IP 66 and IP 68 and the safety requirements of ATEX directive 94/9/EC, they are suitable for all applications occurring within a broad ambient temperature range from -40 deg C to +75 deg C. With thread versions from M12 to M63 available, the new glands can be used for cables with diameters ranging from 4-48mm.

This broad range is achieved by using a single seal for each gland size.

As a result, it is not necessary to either convert the gland or modify or exchange the seal.

The new series also includes multiple glands with threads from M20 to M40 and a special seal for use with AsiBUS cables.

Dependent on the version required, it is possible to clamp together up to seven cables with diameters from 5-7mm or eight cables with diameters from 5-6mm.

Another big advantage of the Series 8160 glands is that they use an identical design to R.

Stahl's widely-used Series 8161 plastic glands.

So only one assembly tool is needed.

Another cost cutting innovation lies in the fact that virtually all the company's seals can be used with both brass and plastic glands.

* About R Stahl - R Stahl Technology Group comprises the core divisions of explosion protection and Material Handling.

In its 125-year history, this innovative company has acquired international competence and recognition both in materials handling and in explosion protection with its many pioneering developments.

Enclosures have soft starters for hazard areas

A range of Ex flameproof enclosures incorporating star delta replacement soft starter are rated EExd II 2 GD for use in areas made potentially hazardous by the presence of flammable media.
Fairford Electronics has joined forces with JCE Europe to offer a range of Ex flameproof enclosures incorporating the Fairford SDF Star Delta replacement soft starter. The integrated packages are rated EExd II 2 GD for use in areas made potentially hazardous by the presence of flammable liquids, gases, vapours and dusts (Zones 1, 21, 2 and 22). 'There is a continuing growth of hazardous areas in all sectors of manufacturing, evidenced by recent estimates showing that 50% of all industrial applications now contain a hazardous area of one type or another,' said David Bennett, managing director of Fairford Electronics.

'The result of this growth is that increasing numbers of explosion proof electric motors are being employed across all industry sectors.

The integration of our SDF soft starter, into flameproof enclosures means that we can meet the demands of our customers to start these motors, with the same high level of control that we provide for standard motors.' The incorporation of SDF soft starters into JCE flameproof EExd enclosures also extends the benefits of replacement Star Delta starting into potentially hazardous areas.

The SDF soft starter is a quick, easy and cost effective way for companies to overcome the problem of transients associated with Star Delta starting.

The SDF offers a new form of soft starting that overcomes the problems of Star Delta current surges by ramping up to an initial voltage; holding the voltage; and then ramping up to full volts without disconnecting the motor from the mains supply.

This eliminates the high current that can occur at the transition from Star to Delta phases.

Fairford chose the JCE range of enclosures because of their many years experience as a manufacturer and supplier of Ex hazardous area equipment, world-wide.

Certified for Groups IIA, IIB and IIB+H2 locations, the JCE flameproof EExd enclosures are used widely to house equipment such as relays, contactors, ammeters, voltmeters and other transmitting/receiving instruments.

The enclosures are manufactured from copper-free aluminium, with the option of natural or corrosion resistant finishes.

It offers ingress protection to IP66 and 67, when used with KF-F connectors, and operates over temperatures ranging from -50 deg C to +130 deg C.

LT-H is also available in blue for intrinsically safe applications.

Complementing this is LT-T conduit which comes complete with a Limited Fire Hazard covering and is fully compliant to London Underground (LUL) specification and MOD defence standards.

It is constructed from a helically wound galvanised steel core with cotton packing and completed with the LFH covering.

Both LT-H and LT-T conduits can be used in conjunction with the Kopex HA, ATEX approved explosion proof Barrier Gland.

The combined system is ideally suited for installations where flammable gases or vapours may be present, such as offshore and onshore oil and gas installations, as well as petrochemical plants.

Long travel cable carriers replace guide troughs

Cable carriers replace guide troughs for long travels and have a positioning guide and floor bumpers to keep energy chains in line and prevent the top of the chain from 'de-railing'.
Igus has launched Auto-Glide cable carriers instead of guide troughs for long travels. The new Auto-Glide system comes equipped with a positioning guide and floor bumpers to keep energy chains in line and to prevent the top of the chain from de-railing and potentially impacting performance. The positioning guide is attached to the moving portion of the energy chain and approximately three feet in from the end point.

It fits snugly on the side of the chain and keeps the chain aligned.

The new floor bumpers are circular in design and placed at intervals along the length of the chain.

They also prevent potential misalignment of the energy chain.

They can be driven over by vehicles operating in the area without sustaining any damage.

With Auto-Glide, energy chains can attain travel distances up to 328ft without a guide trough.

Speeds up to 16ft/s can be achieved and customers can save on purchasing and installation cost and installation time.

The energy chain system requires less space, but retains its strength, stability and performance.

Guide troughs can create an obstacle for forklifts or other traffic.

Auto-Glide keeps the area clear.

Auto-Glide incorporates a ribbed design along the inner radius of the chain.

These ribs interlock to create integrated channels for the cable carrier to glide along.

Auto-Glide is an ideal solution for long-travel applications, such as conveyor systems, assembly equipment, textile machinery and gantry robots.

Virtually any application using guide troughs in a relatively clean environment can employ an Auto-Glide system.
